Everything the ritual actually needs
Six pieces, and none of them spare. A speckled stoneware bowl with a pouring lip, a bamboo whisk of around a hundred prongs, a ceramic stand to dry the whisk on, a bamboo scoop, a long bamboo spoon and a fine mesh sifter. That is the full set, and it is the difference between matcha that froths properly and matcha that sits in clumps at the bottom of a mug.
Why the pieces matter
The sifter breaks up the powder before water touches it, which is where clumping starts. The bowl is wide and shallow so the whisk can move properly, and the lip means you pour rather than tip. The whisk stand is the piece people skip and then regret: bamboo prongs dry bent and eventually snap, and standing the whisk on a former keeps its shape and lets air through the middle.
Why you will love it
- Complete from the first cup - nothing else to buy.
- Speckled stoneware bowl - 14cm wide with a pouring lip, cream glaze mottled with dark brown.
- Whisk stand included - keeps the bamboo in shape and dry between uses.
- Fine mesh sifter - stainless steel, and the thing that actually stops clumping.
- Natural bamboo - whisk, scoop and spoon, no plastic.
- Arrives boxed - it makes an obvious gift, which is how most of these are bought.

Care
Rinse the whisk in warm water straight after use, never with soap, and stand it on its holder to dry. The bowl can be hand washed. Keep all the bamboo out of the dishwasher, since a hot cycle will dry it out and split the prongs.
The glaze is speckled and applied by hand, so the pattern varies between bowls.
