A spice mortar, and the size is the point
This is 9.5cm across and 5cm deep, which makes it a spice mortar rather than a guacamole bowl. That is deliberate. A wide mortar spreads a small quantity of seed too thin to crush properly, so peppercorns and cumin skitter around the edges. A narrow, deep bowl keeps everything under the pestle where it belongs.
Why granite beats marble
Marble looks handsome and polishes beautifully, which is exactly the problem. A slick surface lets seeds slide instead of breaking. Granite is harder and slightly coarser, so it bites. It is also dense enough that the mortar stays put on the worktop while you lean on the pestle, rather than travelling.
Why you will love it
- Granite, not marble - grips the spice instead of letting it slide.
- Deep narrow bowl - nothing escapes up the sides.
- Heavy enough to stay still - no chasing it round the worktop.
- Releases far more flavour than a grinder - crushing breaks the oils out, blades just cut.
- Nothing to wear out - no blades, no motor, no parts.
- Also does pastes - garlic, ginger, chilli, curry paste, pesto in small quantities.

Care
Season it before first use by grinding a spoonful of dry rice until it comes out grey, then discard and repeat until the rice stays white. That removes the loose grit every new stone mortar carries. After that, rinse with water and no detergent, since stone is porous and soap will linger and turn up in the next thing you crush.
